PRESIDENTS MESSAGE:
As I work with children, adults and veterans with disabilities, I often think... "What would I do if I suddenly became disabled"?
I know, I pray, that I would have the intrepid spirit,
tenacity, patience,
creativity
and sheer will to adapt and conquer, that many of my disabled students have displayed.
Recently in Miami, I met a woman (Kerry) who is physically considered an incomplete quadriplegic after a tragic event many years ago.
She has since gone on to become a world
champion
sailboat racer though Shake A Leg Miami, an incredible organization that uses sailing as a form of therapy and rehabilitation, much like Diveheart uses scuba diving.
Kerry has recently conquered scuba diving and says she loves it and wants to continue to investigate the underwater world.
When you look in Kerry's eyes you see HUMANITY.
Despite the rage and confusion of a single moment in time that left her with her
lessened
physical ability, Kerry keeps her focus positive, her spirit
buoyant
and her compassion, understanding and empathy for others unwavering.
They say GOOD DIVERS ARE ALWAYS LEARNING. I know I've learned a lot by just by getting to know and work with Kerry, and I hope the story of her journey touches and moves your
spirit
as it did mine.
